We have brought Daruma dolls that have undergone a sacred ritual from the birthplace of Daruma in Japan right here! These Daruma dolls have been blessed in the Kaigen (開眼) Ceremony, or the Eye-Opening Ritual, at Darumaji Temple, Shorinzan, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture—the historical origin of Daruma in Japan, with a legacy spanning over 328 years. What is the Kaigen Ceremony? During this sacred ritual, a Buddhist monk opens the eyes of the Daruma and inscribes a prayer or wish onto its body, symbolizing the bestowal of power and spirit into the doll. Each ritually blessed Daruma comes with a certificate of authenticity affixed to its back. This is a custom-made Daruma, specially crafted for this event, with:
- The left side of its eye engraved with the phrase “Happiness and Fulfillment” (幸福円満)
- The right side of its eye engraved with the phrase “Achievement of All Wishes” (萬願成就)
These Daruma dolls are meticulously handcrafted by Daimonya, a renowned Daruma maker in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, which has been operating for over 100 years and passed down through five generations. Today, Daimonya produces more than 70,000 Daruma dolls annually, preserving the rich tradition of Japanese craftsmanship.
